Below is a link to a Times article, relating to a speech given by Sheikh Ali Gomma from Egypt-

A number of points can be made:
1- It is natural for Ali Gomma to make such comments against an Islamic system, given that he would be arrested on entering Egypt
2- Ali Gomma, fails to realise the changing opinion in the Muslim world, an incresed shift to demands for an Islamic based state.
3- It is natural for Ali Gomma to make diluted comments given that he had been invited to a conference on Islamic moderatism by the British government.
4- Clearly, Ali Gomma needs to take on his responsibility as an scholar to speak out against the dictorial regime in Egypt, especially at this moment in time as the oppression increases to usher in the succession process (i.e Hosni Mubarak being replaced by his son Gamal Mubarak)
5- There needs to be an honest debate on an Islamic system, rather than those who call for such an state being demonised as being fanatics and radicals.
